چکیده

We study the evolution of long-lived controversial debates as manifested on Twitter from 2011 to 2016. Speci cally, we explore how the structure of interactions and content of discussion varies with the level of collective attention, as evidenced by the number of users discussing a topic. Spikes in the volume of users typically correspond to external events that increase the public attention on the topic, for instance, discussions about ‘gun control’ often erupt after a mass shooting. This work is the rst to study the dynamic evolution of polarized online debates at such scale. By employing a wide array of network and content analysis measures, we nd consistent evidence that increased collective attention is associated with increased network polarization and network concentration within each side of the debate; and overall more uniform lexicon usage across all users. Unanimity-Aware Gain for Highly Subjective Assessments

IR tasks have diversi€ed: human assessments of items such as social media posts can be highly subjective, in which case it becomes necessary to hire many assessors per item to reƒect their diverse views. For example, the value of a tweet for a given purpose may be judged by (say) ten assessors, and their ratings could be summed up to de€ne its gain value for computing a graded-relevance evaluat...

Timescales of Massive Human Entrainment

The past two decades have seen an upsurge of interest in the collective behaviors of complex systems composed of many agents entrained to each other and to external events. In this paper, we extend the concept of entrainment to the dynamics of human collective attention. We conducted a detailed investigation of the unfolding of human entrainment--as expressed by the content and patterns of hund...
